Attacking Javelin Troops
Clearly, though, different enemies require different tactics. The above works for all enemies which do not have a ranged attack option. If I'm faced with archers or javelins, then I tend to charge straight into them with a cavalry unit (used as a sort of kamikaze group). This nullifies their ranged attack bonuses and forces them to engage in hand-to-hand. Hopefully, the cavalry will be able to survive until the tortoised legions arrive to wipe the enemy out.

General Comments

Great post Terratheon. It looks like this belongs on the Strategy page oh mighty web site Angels.

These tactics are great, but I must be running up against the worst armies out there because I've always been able to defeat any invasion with 3 legions and 3 javelins. What kind of armies are you folks needing these wonderful tactics fair?
[Cusius]

Cusius,
There's winning and then there's WINNING! Shield Wall is quite deadly indeed and can beat back just about anything (I've come across), especially with towers in the rear. However, it can cost you quite a few legionnaire's and in almost all scenarios of C3, legionnaires = big denarii.

Besides, my attitude toward C3 is like the Brazilians toward soccer -- it's most important to win beautifully and playing beautifully is more important than winning!

Sincerely,

G.O.

P.S. Homage to thee, Jayhawk, Lord of Iconography, King of the Mapmakers, whose names are manifold, whose forms are holy, thou being of hidden form in the forums, whose Ka is holy.

You are right. What we need is just enough scenario's built by you people, who are aware of the intricacies of battle in c3.
Military-action lovers just care about how many armies can be conjured up during a game, the ordinary scenario builder just wants to conform to rules laid out in the forums, concerning playability, balance, etc.
I know how to make a map, a scenario that is difficult to get rates, but I never specialised in making military matters come first. We need some of you folks to make scenario's with a real military edge to it.
And I don't mean just hurl 120 enemies every year, but map building that forces players to adapt obviously easy strategies to the terrain and give some thought to city building and other infrastructure-problems that have effect on strategy and tactics. Bob the Lethargic made a nice attempt making such a scenario(Sargentum), but he lacked the insight you military buffs have, so in the end it was still winnable, even for me, a proverbial coward on these matters. Terratheon! Make a real killer, one that even you could only win after at least three trials.
Scenario builders everywhere try the same and prove this game is in fact a wargame in disguise.

Cusius: I generally use the Scenario editor and by scheduling 5 or 6 invasions in one year, or by use of the enemy invasion cheat (Right Click on well, press Alt than "K," click on question mark in help menu, and press Alt than "K" again repeatedly, I can generate huge enemy armies all at once. The Enemy invasion cheat can be used in career games too, so if you feel under-challenged, whenever an enemy invades, or just when you want to pass time, use the cheat to reinforce the scheduled invasions or to add new ones.

Gunterius Oeconimicus-I applaud your preference for the artistry of process, over the bottom line of out come. I concur totally.

Pontius Pilatus: I have written a few military event scenarios for the Olympics, (Tentatively scheduled for weeks 2 and 3} and also a Kamikaze scenario I described awhile ago on the forum, and sent to Abelius. I will be adding others soon
[Terratheon]

Jayhawk....The diagrams are wonderful....but you forgot the wolves and the blood and guts (mine) that are strewn around my battlefields after I get eaten.....

Guys (or should I say "warriors"?):
There is a book in here, and I suggest somebody makes a general overview of all this, so it can be placed somewhere on the site. Real good stuff...
